Information about ARMENIA Armenia is one of the cradles of civilisation, and was the first nation to adopt Christianity in the 4th century, yet remains an undiscovered treasure trove of history and culture. Tourist facilities are few and far between, but then so are queues and a thriving café culture gives you a real feel for the warmth of the people and their laid-back lifestyle. The Armenians love to party and the festival calendar is topped and tailed by New Years Eve, when tradition dictates that you open your door to walk-in guests. Motherhood and Beauty Day is on 7th April and on 9th May, WWII heroes are honoured by the young with Victory Day. In June, when summer is reaching its peak, Water Day sees the whole country drenched. Outside of the cities, the countryside is astonishing; cloaked in wildflowers, framed by snowy mountains, pitted with deep caves and endowed with more than 40,000 ancient churches and monuments. Its depths hold a bounty of natural resources, including gold, copper and precious stones. Culture-vultures are especially well catered for. The Artists Union will take you on an art tour, while the Yerevan Institute of Architecture will arrange for you to visit Armenia’s best buildings, and the Speliological Society takes guided hikes, caving and mountain expeditions to suit your exact requirements. Although the country is distinctly Middle Eastern in flavour, it is the Orthodox Church which provides its most visible examples of Armenian art with intricate stone carvings dating back to the 7th century. The economy of the country has been invigorated by renewed waves of modernisation of its infrastructure which has provided much needed stability. It has good trade links with many European countries and is striving to see these links expanded.
